How Fermented Foods Can Naturally Heal Your Gums
🌟 The Probiotic Power of Fermented Foods
For years, I’ve witnessed the powerful ways fermented foods can transform our health—from digestion to immunity to mood. But did you know they can also support something as specific as gum health? I really noticed when I came back from vacation and I hadn't had my kefir and yogurts and noticed my gums were bleeding. When I went back to having kefir every day it stopped, and so I experimented, and sure enough, kefir was very important in keeping my gums healthy. I really noticed a huge difference if I had it twice a day - about 1/2 cup, morning and nighttime before bed.
Just recently, a friend told me that when she had kefir twice a day to help with her asthma, her dentist told her she had noticeably less plaque on her teeth. When she only had it once a day she had more plaque than when she did it twice a day.
Those beautiful jars of kefir, cultured veggies, and probiotic yogurt are quietly working wonders on your smile, too.
It’s one more reminder that fermented foods don’t just feed you —they heal you.
🌟 Gum Health Begins in the Microbiome
Gum Health Begins in the Microbiome
Bleeding gums, tenderness, and inflammation are often signs of gingivitis, a condition caused by harmful bacteria that build up around the gumline. These bacteria form plaque and trigger an immune response that can lead to swelling, bleeding, and even tooth loss if left unchecked.
But here’s the good news: just like your gut, your mouth has its own microbiome, and when you give it the right bacteria, you create a thriving ecosystem that supports healing and resilience. When you eat fermented foods like kefir, cultured vegetables, and probiotic yogurt, you’re doing more than feeding your gut—you’re seeding your entire body with beneficial bacteria. These good microbes don’t just stay in your digestive system. They travel through your mouth, your throat, and even colonize your sinuses and gums.
Here’s how fermented foods help your gums:
🦠 They Crowd Out the Bad Guys
Bleeding gums occur primarily because of inflammation caused by harmful bacteria in your mouth. Kefir, yogurt, and fermented veggies are packed with different beneficial probiotics like Lactobacillus reuteri and Lactobacillus plantarum and many other strains. These probiotics help displace and suppress harmful oral bacteria responsible for gingivitis and inflammation. These strains are known to fight off the harmful bacteria responsible for gum disease. They help restore balance and harmony, just like they do in the gut.[1,2]
🌿 They Reduce Inflammation
Fermented foods are full of anti-inflammatory compounds, like bioavailable nutrients and peptides that help soothe irritated gums. Kefir’s probiotics not only suppress harmful bacteria but also actively reduce inflammation by interacting with your body's immune response. Lower inflammation means your gums become stronger, healthier, and less prone to bleeding.
💪 They Strengthen Gum Tissue
Fermented dairy, in particular, is rich in calcium, magnesium, and vitamin K2, which are essential for healthy teeth and bones—including the bones that support your teeth. Strong roots, healthy gums!
🦠 Balanced Oral Microbiome
Regular kefir consumption helps create a healthy oral microbiome due to its many strains where beneficial bacteria dominate. When your mouth’s microbiome is balanced, inflammation significantly decreases—resulting in healthier gums that don't bleed.
🥛 Minerals and Vitamins Strengthen Gum Tissue
Kefir naturally contains minerals like calcium, phosphorus, magnesium, and vitamins such as K2, D, and B-complex. These nutrients nourish your gums and support healing and tissue regeneration.
💧 Natural Antimicrobial Peptides
Kefir contains beneficial peptides and organic acids (like lactic acid), which gently cleanse and maintain oral health by creating an environment that's unfriendly to harmful bacteria.
How to Use Fermented Foods for Gum Health
Here are a few simple ways to incorporate these healing foods into your daily routine:
-
✅ Have Kefir Daily
Just 1 cup of kefir per day can introduce billions of probiotics that help balance your entire microbiome, including your mouth. Splitting it up into two servings, one in the morning and one at night, works really well for a lot of people with gum problems. -
✅ Try L. reuteri Yogurt Topically
This special probiotic strain is a friend to your gums. You can have it to eat, you can swish a spoonful around your mouth before swallowing, or you can apply a small amount directly to your gums with a clean finger after brushing. You can eat it too! -
✅ Rinse with Fermented Veggie Brine (see below)
Dilute the brine from sauerkraut or cultured pickles with water and swish it around your mouth for 30 seconds. It’s like a probiotic mouthwash—refreshing and healing! -
✅ Stay Away from Refined Sugars
These feed the bad bacteria that cause inflammation. Stick to whole, natural foods and let your cultured foods do their work.
🥬 Fermented Sauerkraut For Gum Health
Most people think of sauerkraut as a tangy side dish, but when it’s raw and naturally fermented, it becomes a powerful probiotic food that can help heal your gums from the inside and outside.
🌿 Why Sauerkraut Helps Your Gums
1. Rich in Live Probiotics
Raw sauerkraut is teeming with beneficial bacteria like Lactobacillus plantarum and Leuconostoc mesenteroides. These good microbes:
-
Inhibit the growth of harmful bacteria that cause gingivitis and plaque
-
Balance the oral microbiome
-
Reduce inflammation and support tissue healing
2. Natural Source of Vitamin C
Vitamin C is critical for gum tissue repair and collagen production. Sauerkraut is one of the best fermented plant sources of vitamin C—helping your gums stay strong and resilient.
3. Antibacterial Brine
The brine (the liquid the sauerkraut ferments in) has gentle antimicrobial properties that help cleanse the mouth without disturbing the balance of good bacteria.
🥄 How to Use Sauerkraut for Gum Health
✅ Eat it Daily
Add a few forkfuls of raw sauerkraut to your meals. You’re not just nourishing your gut—you’re supporting the health of your gums with every bite.
✅ Use the Brine as a Mouth Rinse
This is one of my favorite tricks:
-
Pour a tablespoon of sauerkraut brine into a small cup.
-
Dilute with a tablespoon or two of water.
-
Swish it around in your mouth for 30 seconds, especially around your gums.
-
Spit it out or swallow—your choice! (It’s probiotic-rich either way.)
Doing this once or twice a day can help keep your mouth’s bacteria in balance and reduce inflammation.
