Bringing New Life with Cultured Foods
Springtime Cultured Foods
Springtime is a season of celebration of new life, hope, and the quiet renewal that comes after a long winter. It always reminds me that even when things look dormant, there’s something beautiful growing beneath the surface. And that’s how it is with fermentation, too. Every jar of kefir, every crock of cultured veggies, every spoonful of yogurt—it’s all part of a living story of transformation.
🌸 Supporting Your Gut in Springtime
Spring is a season of renewal, and your gut loves that, too! 🌸 As your body transitions out of winter, gut health becomes especially important. A thriving microbiome can help ease seasonal digestive changes, support your immune system, reduce allergy flare-ups, and give you that extra boost of energy to match the sunnier days ahead.
Here’s why gut health is important in spring:
- 🌼 Allergy Season: A diverse and well-fed gut microbiome can help regulate inflammation and keep the immune system balanced, potentially mitigating allergic reactions.
- 🥕 Digestive Reset: Spring is a natural time to re-populate the gut with beneficial bacteria after the winter season when dietary choices might be less focused on gut-friendly foods.
- ⚡ Energy and Immunity: A healthy gut supports efficient digestion and overall energy levels, contributing to a boost in vitality during the spring months.
- 🧠 Mood and Cognitive Function: The gut-brain axis plays a significant role in mental well-being, and a healthy microbiome can positively impact mood and cognitive function.
Seasonal Shifts in Gut Health
🌬️ Winter: When the temperatures drop and the days get shorter, your gut microbiome quietly shifts. I've noticed that during the colder months, we tend to crave heartier, starchier meals—and it makes sense. But those changes also mean we’re likely getting less fiber and fewer polyphenols, which are so important for feeding beneficial bacteria that want to thrive in our guts. These little powerhouses are a keystone strain for gut health, and microbes loves to feast on plant fibers!
This winter slowdown in microbial diversity may be the body’s way of conserving energy—shifting things inside us to help us stay warm and nourished when the world outside is cold and still. I think it’s beautiful how even our microbiome knows how to rest and adapt.
🌱 Spring: And then—just like the flowers start to bloom—your gut begins to come alive again. With fresh greens, fruits, and sunshine returning, microbial diversity starts to flourish. As we bring more fresh, fiber-rich foods back to our plates, we’re feeding a whole community of beneficial microbes that help us feel light, energized, and clear-headed.
And let’s not forget the sunshine ☀️—more daylight means more vitamin D, which is a key nutrient for supporting a healthy gut microbiome. It’s no wonder we feel so renewed during this season. Our bodies respond to the light, the food, and the rhythm of nature itself.
The Miracle of Fermentation
Fermentation is a little miracle that happens every day in our kitchens. It’s quiet and unseen, but it brings life. It reminds me of that moment when everything changes—when we realize our bodies are always trying to heal, always seeking balance and light. Cultured foods are a way to help with that healing.
Tips for supporting gut health in spring:
- 🥗 Embrace seasonal produce: Incorporate fresh fruits and vegetables like strawberries, spinach, carrots, and zucchini into your meals.
- 🌾 Focus on fiber: Choose fiber sources like quinoa, oats, brown rice, chia seeds, and all fruits and veggies.
- 🫙 Incorporate fermented foods: Include probiotic-rich foods like yogurt, kefir, kombucha, kefir soda, or sauerkraut to support gut flora balance.
- 💧 Stay hydrated: Drink plenty of water, herbal teas, or water infused with cucumber or mint, and add some minerals for your body to stay balanced.
So celebrate with foods that are alive. Bring color and joy to your table, and remember that the same power that raises the flowers, the sun, and even your spirit—is quietly at work inside you, too.
Here are some of my favorite cultured recipes that I thought you would enjoy any time of year, but especially spring. Whether you’re hosting brunch or making something special just for yourself, these recipes bring a probiotic twist to tradition.

A Few of My Springtime Recipes!
🥚 Deviled Eggs with Cultured Mayo and Mustard
✨ 🥚 This is a classic deviled egg recipe—with just a few cultured swaps! 💛 Just as delicious, and now loaded with probiotics too! Nobody will even know you made the switch. 😉
✨ Eggs are little powerhouses of nutrition and contain naturally occurring carotenoids. Diets rich in carotenoids have been linked to longer lifespans and lower rates of chronic illness. 🧡
For years, eggs got a bad rap—but not anymore! When you buy eggs from free-range hens 🐓, you’re getting so much more:
- ⅔ more vitamin A 🌟
- 2x more omega-3s 🐟
- 3x more vitamin E 🌼
- 7x more beta-carotene 🥕
Make the switch and commit to buying only free-range eggs. Your body—and your gut—will thank you! 🌿 Get The Recipe
🍓🍋 Strawberry Lemon Icebox Kefir Pie
🍓 This is one of the very first dessert recipes I ever made with kefir—and it’s still one of my favorites! It’s a chilled icebox pie that shines in the summertime, especially when made with fresh seasonal fruit.
You can switch it up by using different fruits, and it always turns out delicious. In fact, I served this to the staff and crew during a PBS special I was in, and they gobbled it up! 😋 It’s a perfect blend of creamy, fruity, and refreshing—with all the goodness of probiotics inside. 💗
🥕 Cultured Carrot Cake in a Jar
🍎 I love the dates and nuts in this recipe. When combined with the apples and carrots 🥕 it's a delight to make and even more fun to eat!
This cultured veggie-and-fruit combo can get *really* cultured thanks to the natural sugars in the carrots and apples 🍏—so enjoy it within a few weeks for the best flavor (which definitely won’t be a problem 😋).
It’s crazy good and so hard to resist. One of my absolute favorites! 💛 Get The Recipe
🥕 Carrot Cake Kefir Soda
🥕 I absolutely love using carrot juice in kefir soda—it’s bright, sweet, and full of life! That love inspired me to create a Carrot Cake Kefir Soda that’s paired with apple juice 🍎 and a dash of cinnamon 🌿. The result? A fizzy, spiced soda that tastes like dessert in a glass—and you’ll want to make it again and again! ✨
