The Must-Have Food Medicine – in Your Fridge
The Medicine in a Jar
One day my daughter Holli came running into the room and burst into tears. She cried and said, "Help me! My stomach hurts so bad." And then she ran to the bathroom and started throwing up. She had spent the night with a friend who had just had the same thing, so I'm pretty sure she picked it up from them. Sickness is pretty rare in my house; but when it does strike, my family thinks it's the end of the world and I should be able to fix it right NOW! So I did what I normally do by giving her a blanket, a soft pillow, a heating pad for her stomach, and one spoonful of the juice from cultured veggies. A half hour later I gave her one more spoonful of cultured veggie juice and then the stomach pain and vomiting stopped. With a smile on her face, she said, "Mom it only took an hour. I timed it and it doesn't hurt anymore. Thanks, Mom"
Cultured vegetables for stomach problems
Cultured vegetables are extremely effective when dealing with stomach problems. The powerful good bacteria lactobacillus plantarum, abundant in cultured vegetables, is a powerful force against any foreign invader that is trying to attack your body. L. plantarum was isolated from a traditional African fermented food, ben saalga, and was tested for inhibition of food poisoning and pathogenic bacteria. L. Plantarum completely eliminated Bacillus cereus, Escherichia coli, and Salmonella enterica, within a 48 hour incubation period.1
Another study was done on the L plantarum that is found in Kimchi. The antibacterial activities against food-poisoning causing bacteria were examined with a culture using L. Plantarum. The antibacterial effects were clearly observed against all the bacteria tested in this work. 2,3
These billions of microbes, it will fight on your behalf to defeat the enemy and eliminate it from the body. The stories I have witnessed are nothing short of miraculous. On several occasions, I have used cultured vegetables and their juice to get rid of food poisoning and a nasty stomach virus. It was like injecting some kind of magic tonic that worked so quickly I was shocked. When my children came down with the virus or stomach upset I gave them small sips of the juice (the juice is just as powerful as the veggies) from cultured veggies and watched as a couple of hours later the vomiting and diarrhea and stomach cramps subsided. I have personally seen it knock out food poisoning within a few hours.
Use the juice from any cultured veggies
Cultured vegetables work so incredibly well for this - it continues to amaze me. You can use any juice from cultured veggies and they all seem to work by sending in a mighty force of microbes that kill and destroy pathogens and send them on their way. You can also eat the vegetables, but most can't handle food when they have stomach distress, so the juice is what I use to get some good bacteria in them to fight the battle. I don't know of anything else on the market, be it drugs or food, that has the power to do what these special probiotic foods do - especially for a stomach virus. I have tons of testimonies from people who have used them, as I have, to stop a stomach virus in its tracks
Works for food poisoning too
Cultured vegetables are loaded with vitamin C and billions of good microbes. They are really our ally in keeping us healthy and building a strong inner ecosystem that keeps our immune system running strong. We have the equipment placed inside of us to take care of us, but so many have destroyed it with years of antibiotic use and unhealthy diets. Rebuild their guts and give them the resources they need with prebiotic and probiotic foods. Keep a jar of cultured veggies in your fridge at all times and then you'll have powerful medicine at your disposal should sickness strike. This remedy also works for food poisoning too. Just try this the next time anyone in your family has a stomach virus. It's so incredible it will make you, too, believe that everybody should have a jar of cultured veggies in their fridge.
Shelley's Cultured Vegetables is the recipe I used to help Holli, but there are many more recipes on my recipe page. Here are a few others I have used to conquer a virus. (Scroll down!) It works like magic. Just you wait and see.

Here are a couple of stories that were shared with me
Just a few tablespoons of cultured veggie juice saved me again this past week. Somehow I had food poisoning. I knew when that awful feeling struck what I needed to do, but before I could get to my fridge....well...let's just say it's a good thing the bathroom was on the way to the kitchen! But still, I knew if I did not get some cultures in me, this would become an all-nighter of what could now only be dry heaves. So I forced myself to get down a couple tablespoons of cultured veggie juice. I started to feel a bit better quite fast. After about 30 minutes I made myself take more. Finally was able to go to sleep. (Why does this always happen at night?) I woke up so much better the next day! THANK YOU DONNA for teaching us all about real food medicine!
Donna, Out of desperation for my son who was throwing up all night until 7 the next evening, I googled remedies for a tummy bug (I don’t like over the counter meds). A suggestion (yours) was to give fermented juice. So I did. Try telling your sick son to drink kimchi juice with a straight face, “It “might” make you feel better 😄.” He drank it and within a few minutes, he was back to normal. The next day I researched more about fermented foods, then realized that I had one of your books, Cultured Food for Life. I had bought it for ideas on milk kefir and kombucha. I opened that book up again and read it from cover to cover with a pen and paper to take notes. I loved it so much that I ordered Cultured Food in a Jar. Just as we were leaving to go out for pizza, the book came in the mail. So, I took it along to check it out while waiting on our food. Oh my goodness, I read small bits of it to my boys and husband. To make a long story short, we now have fermented veggies in the fridge and new ones sitting out fermenting all the time. I’m sorry your story started out rough, but I am thankful that it did and I am thankful that you have shared it. I pray God blesses you and your family beyond measure. Side note, I now have Cultured Food for Health on my bookshelf too.

Food is the most magical thing in the world. It makes the cells of our bodies and it holds powers that few understand. If you take food and ferment it, then those foods get super powers.
